Kaho'olawe Fire, Day 5, Advancement Slows Significantly
12:57 AM · Feb 27, 2020Reports from the Maui Fire Department, and thermal satellite imagery by NASA FRIMS indicate the Kaho'olawe Fire has diminished after 5 days of burning. The brush fire started on the western coast and quickly spread in dry grasses to cover over 5,000 acres. Leftover military munitions and small arms cartridges on the uninhabited island from decades of ordinance usage prevented firefighters from combating the blaze from land and air. Only mild damages have been reported by the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission, the group which helps manage Kaho'olawe. "As we move through day 5 of this fire, we are grateful that the fire seems to have slowed in certain spots as it approaches the hard pan in the central mauka areas of the island. Based on the many photos we have received from local contributors and the video footage from the Maui Fire Department, it seems that the fire line along the north coast is still slowly advancing." ~ Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission Images from Maui FD and KIRC
