Kīlauea Eruption Update & USGS Volcano Awareness Month Part 2, January 27, 2022
3:02 AM · Jan 28, 2022Kīlauea's summit eruption continues after 4 months, albeit with frequent pauses and restarts. Webcams catch the lava burst after the latest hiatus, deformation of the lake crust, and spatter coming through it. Earthquakes quiet down, with a notable non-volcanic M4.7 offshore Maui, while Maunaloa remains relatively quiet. While still noting no change in threat to people, we review the images, monitoring signals and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, as well as longer time-lapses produced from their images. Special this week, we play back the video updates for the past two weeks of Volcano Awareness Month presented by the USGS-HVO, discussing live viewer questions and comments in between segments, including: - “Deformation at Hawaiʻi's volcanoes during 2021: The start of a new chapter” by Ingrid Johanson, geophysicist - “The ups and downs of Kīlauea's gas emissions in 2021” by Patricia Nadeau, geologist. https://youtu.be/LKEg5rwJ1wA
