LIVE Maunaloa Update, May 7, 2021

3:37 AM · May 8, 2021

A second quiet week follows the flurry of seismic activity on Maunaloa's northwest flank from late March to April, while the summit GPS line continues a slight contraction. The recent USGS-HVO Volcano Watch article touches on recent observations on the summit, which we dive into with historical context in order to frame the variations, especially in the summit cross-caldera distances as measured by GPS and formerly by EDM (Electronic Distance Measurement). We present current and published USGS-HVO data as we consider if the volcano will revert back to background as happened in the somewhat similar 2015 sequence, or is it showing variability similar to what was seen before previous eruptions? As usual, we discuss live viewer questions. https://youtu.be/PYtUm2qKBzM
