Kīlauea Eruption Update, Maunaloa & Samoa, August 25, 2022

More ooze-up lava flows and more in-filling of the summit crater were the story on Kīlauea this past week, where the ongoing eruption endures in its now normal pattern, though the open lava surface continues to slowly shrink. The influx rate at the start of this month decreased from end of last month, similar to a fluctuation from late June into early July, and coincident with the clustered cycles of smaller deflation-inflation events evident on the ground tilt. That pattern subtly changed with the resurgence of ooze-up flows, so the output is likely still in flux. As usual we review webcam time-lapses, monitoring data and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory that document the minor changes in activity, as well as a Lava Viewing update and discussion of live viewer questions. Looking in on Maunaloa, only minor changes are evident following its recent seismic activity, still quietly adjusting as it continues its long-term inflation. The USGS-HVO has deployed and is responding to increased volcanic earthquakes in American Samoa, occurring between Taʻu and Ofu-Olosega volcanoes, and we summarize public releases regarding that activity as well.
